DIY Bride: read this article first!

Are you, like many brides these days, tempted to arrange your own wedding flowers?

Are you leaning this way because you want to save the money ?

Would you like some advice from a professional?

In the more than 30 years that I have been designing for brides, I have seen many a ‘DIY’ bride that simply becomes overwhelmed with all the prep work and end up so stressed out that they don’t enjoy their own special day!  And interestingly enough, they usually wind-up spending much more on the products etc. than what they had budgeted. To make all the elements of your wedding come together, you need to work with professionals in most specialized areas, such as: your cake, photographer, hair dresser, make-up artist and florist.

As a professional floral designer, it is my job to make your wedding flowers look the best they can, while fitting into the budget that you have set. Florists have the knowledge enabling us to ensure that your dream bouquet and decor are idealized without breaking the bank. We know which flowers are in season when, and how to achieve a certain specific look. It is important to know which flower can be used where, which ones are going to give you trouble, and how long it takes certain flowers to open up, allowing them to look just perfect on your wedding day. We are familiar with the product and are capable of conveying a luxurious look while utilizing affordable flowers - which ones give you the biggest bang for your buck. You would think this translates into ‘the least expensive flowers’, but actually that isn’t always the case. For example: at certain times of the year when the peonies are at their best, it becomes cheaper to work with 5 peonies as opposed to roses. This is because the peonies are so large, pretty and full that they make a greater impact compared to 5 roses. But do you know when that time is? We do. Because we design for so many weddings, we also know that you are able to ‘re-use’ a lot of the designs as different elements throughout several parts of your wedding. As an example, we often suggest to brides, re-using your church decor as part of the decoration at the reception, or setting the bridal partys’ flowers in vases along the head table. Now that’s where you can save some money, if you plan ahead!

One of the biggest mistakes brides tend to make, is getting their heart set on a specific flower and not being willing to compromise. This is a huge road block, because although most flowers are available year round, that doesn’t guarantee that they look good all year round or that they are affordable for your budget. As a professional, I suggest to most of my brides, to work with the flowers that are in season during the time you are getting married. We have the ability to help you achieve that certain look and feeling you have dreamed about within the flower choices available, and in the colors you are working with.

Most of all, you need to trust the professionals you select to work with you on your wedding day. They have only your best interest in mind, and its our job to make your special day unforgettable. If you have any questions or would like to schedule a consultation, please contact us via phone (916)447-2001, or email bloemdecor@aol.com

Picking the right prom corsage

Traditionally, it is the “man’s job” to pick out the corsage for his date on this occasion. However in today’s modern social climate, it is totally ok for the girl to pick out her own corsage; especially if it has to be coordinated with dress color and personallity.

All of the corsages and boutonniers are custom made just for you. We love to work with different materials such as feathers, pearls, beads and ribbon. Wrist corsages are priced at $34.95 and boutonniers at $12.99

When you come in to select your corsage, bring in a picture or color sample of the dress; this will help in selecting the right color combinations. Also, keep in mind that it isn’t always possible to match the exact colors of the dress with the flowers:However, sometimes it’s better to go with a complementary color or a flower that coordinates well. Knowing what kind of accents ( i.e. pearls, crystals, feathers etc.) are on the dress is important too so we can be sure to incorporate some bling! We can work with a ton of different materials to really make the corsage custom just for you.

When ordering a corsage for your prom, try not to wait until only a few days ahead of the date. Ordering earlier gives our designers some time to think about the design so they can ensure what youre getting is something truly special.

And don’t forget to order a boutonnier for your date! The boutonnier is also made custom; reflecting your own style and does not need to look like your granfather’s.

Happy Halloween from Bloem Decor Florals

In honor of Halloween, we have decided to give our “friend”, Morticia Addams, free range of our shop. She didn’t very much care for our sense of style so she set straight to work re”vamping” the place from top to bottom! Now Bloem Decor, (or should I say “BOO” Decor), is literally oozing with Morticia’s flair for design.

She has also priveledged us with making some of her infamous and beautiful floral arrangements. Her personal favorite is the “Everlasting Love Rose Bouquet”, a dozen long stems, complete with all the thorns still intact, “guaranteed” to leave a lasting impression!!! However enticingly romantic that may sound, we know that most of you would like your roses to still have some petals on them. For that reason, during the month of October, we have a special on our roses, $79.95!…….(any color except BLACK).

This is also the time to start thinking about decoration your home or office for Thanksgiving, Christmas or any upcoming holiday parties. Our design crew (without Morticia of coarse) will make any holiday or event you are planning memorable and stress free.. Give us a call today at 916.447.2001 and one of our friendly staff will assist you.

Beach wedding bouquet /love on the beach

This couple was so much fun to work with! – They truly wanted something that was unique and different for their beach wedding. They came to us with drift wood and sea glass that they had collected from the same beach they planned on getting married at, and asked if it was possible to work those pieces into her bouquet. We were able to create a ‘one of a kind’ bouquet for her. We even worked those elements into the  brides maids’ bouquets and every boutonnier!

This bride is a perfect example of how you can inject your personality into all of the elements of your wedding.

We love our brides!

Once in a while, there are brides that are just a hoot to work with! We love it when a bride is not afraid to push the envelope a little bit. A couple of weeks ago we worked with a couple who chose the colors of the Chicago Bears!

Blue and orange – Not a combination that we work with a lot, but turned out surprisingly stunning!

The flowers we used were: Flame and Mango Calla’s, Vanda Orchids, Hydrangea,Tulips, Anemones etc. The way these colors popped against the dark blue of the brides maids’ dresses was just wonderful! The great thing was that the bride even carried these colors  throughout with the linen and napkins, and even the favors!

This wedding was truly a fun experience to be a part of- The groom actually walked down the isle to Darth Vader’s theme song from Star Wars!

Mothersday May 13th !

Mother’s Day is Flower Day!

When I think of one day in the year that is synonymous with giving flowers, it has to be Mother’s Day! You could not make my mother happier than if you brought a bouquet of fresh flowers home to her - Daffodils are her favorite, but anything makes her smile.

I’m sure that when you think of your mother, a certain flower comes to mind – something she loves, or something that upon seeing or smelling, reminds you of her. Is it the sweet fragrance of Peonies, Lilac or perhaps Tulips?

So why not show your mom how much you care and send her a bouquet of her favorite flowers this Mother’s Day?

Administrative Professionals week

Memo to All Bosses: Give your Employees a Natural Boost!

Administrative Professionals Week April 23 to 27th

Flowers have a way of saying ,”Job well done!”, “Thanks for all that you do for me!” – And a lot more. One of the most surprising things to me, (even after being in the floral industry for over 30 years), is the genuine look of sheer delight & happiness on the face of recipients when you give them a bouquet of flowers. There is always something so powerful about receiving and giving flowers.

Several studies out there show that live flowers and plants in your daily surroundings actually have an uplifting effect, and in some cases have been shown to help with productivity and even stress relief! So for all you bosses out there, this happens to be a great ”side-effect” of making someones day!

“Our study shows that adding flowers and plants to a work environment can be very meaningful to business in the modern economy” ( Roger Ulrich Ph.d from Texas T&M). In a study by the State University of New Jersey, done only a couple of years ago, researchers found that flowers have an immediate impact on happiness, no matter the age or gender of the recipient. When floral arrangements were placed in a public area- such as foyers, conference areas etc-  they lead to better communication between people!

Now that’s what I call ‘Flower Power’!
